GIVING THANKS FOR THE 2008 TBC CONVOCATION:
a note from Bill Jones, TBC Communications Editor
On August 19, approximately 150 Texas Baptists gathered to celebrate our Baptist heritage and discuss how to preserve that heritage and Baptist distinctives in Texas Baptist life. We are grateful to God for the way that He blessed this meeting. Many thanks to all who made it a success. Bruce Troy, Randel Everett, and Joy Fenner welcomed us. Bill Tillman, our TBC Board Chair, moderated throughout the day and kept all of us on track. George Gagliardi blessed us with beautiful and moving music, inspired - as always - by the testimony of his own life. Thank you, too, to Carol Scott from our TBC staff, who oversaw the registration, along with her other responsibilities, and Carolyn Slaughter, who assisted her.
David Currie, as always, put together an inspiring and educational program. Our panel presenters were helpful in showing us many ways in which our Convention, associations, churches, universities, seminaries, and other institutions are working to teach and promote Baptist distinctives, as well as ways in which all of us can get involved in keeping that heritage alive, healthy, and growing. Then Ellis Orozco tied it all together with his powerful message on the importance of presenting a witness for Christ that is grounded in Baptist principles.
We thank all of these who made such a significant contribution to the future of TBC and Texas Baptists.
On behalf of David Currie, Kerry Horn, Bill Tillman, and the TBC Board, I want to especially thank Pastor Bruce Troy and the staff and members of Gaston Oaks Baptist Church in Dallas for graciously hosting our TBC Convocation. Many volunteers from Gaston Oaks generously gave their time and energy - greeting, cooking, serving, setting up, cleaning, running the sound booth & recording all of the presentations, and carrying out many other responsibilities - to make this Convocation a success. But what really stood out to me was the friendly, courteous, and loving spirit that they showed to us. Many thanks to Gaston Oaks Baptist Church.
