MISSIONS– THE FOCUS OF TEXAS BAPTISTS
by Mauriece V. Johnston

The great Texas Baptist family has always been focused on missions. Innovative ways of doing missions are a part of our churches and associations in 1996.

Woman’s Missionary Union is focusing on Christian Women’s Job Corps, “Operation Lydia” and are broadening ministry in social issues projects. Coed and family involvement in missions is “catching on.” Mary Humphries, Texas WMU president, has said, “For over 100 years, as auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention, Woman’s Missionary Union has been a willing, cooperative partner, working side-by-side and hand-in-hand with our churches, associations, state conventions, mission boards, other agencies and our beloved missionaries. WMU has been faithful to help our churches learn about, pray for and give to missions. The missions mandate of the Great Commission has not changed.” The purposes of Woman’s Missionary Union have not changed.

In Texas, the Baptist General Convention of Texas can count on WMU in every missions endeavor—and we believe that missions is dependent upon prayer and giving. Missions activities and concern unify churches and associations.

TEXAS 2000 is worthy of our support. It is hoped that every church in Texas will find specific ways in which to implement this great missions cause. Let us be open to something new God can do through us in missions.

“Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” ISAIAH 43:18–19
