SAMFORD AND MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE FOLLOW BAYLOR EXAMPLE

In recent days, both Samford University in Alabama and Mississippi College have followed the example of Baylor University and changed their charters to make their board’s self-perpetuating. They join not only Baylor, but also Furman in South Carolina and Stetson in Florida in taking such actions to protect themselves from a fundamentalist takeover of their state conventions.

Both cited a strong desire to remain closely related to their respective state conventions, but said they had to protect their institutions from outside influences, and make sure the schools stayed true to their missions.

It is truly sad such action must be taken on the part of these institutions, but we understand. The alternative is worse. We remember March 9, 1994, Southwestern Seminary!
